LOCAL ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN PROGRAM

Grades: 6-12
Subject area: History, Architecture, Urban Design

Description: Students will learn about history, architecture (with emphasis on Mediterranean style) and urban design. Students evaluate the current state of the City of Coral Gables in terms of Green Living and Green Design and the current development initiatives. Additionally, this program includes the Urban Design and Architecture Pre and Post Visit Packet with educational tools and resources for teachers and students.

Activities:

  • Exhibit Tour: “Creating the Dream: George Merrick and His Vision for Coral Gables” (35 min.)
  • Downtown Walking Tour (35 min.)
  • Art Activity: Design an Urban Plan (30 min.)

Duration: 2 Hours
Site: Coral Gables Museum and City Tour
Cost: City tours are $10 per student. 1 chaperone for every 10 students is required. Chaperones are free.

Limited resources often prevent schools from participating in off-site educational programs. By removing this barrier, schools can incorporate Coral Gables history into their curricula.

Support for the “Local Architecture and Urban Design” program was provided by a grant from the Coral Gables Community Foundation.
