At the Coral Gables Museum, the city becomes our classroom for learning about the civic arts of architecture, urban design, urban planning, historic preservation, environmental preservation, and sustainable development. The City of Coral Gables is a unique, planned community developed in the 1920s and a shining example of the positive impacts that thoughtful architecture and urban planning can have on a community. Our educational programs introduce K-12 students to career paths in the civic arts, such as architect, landscape architect, developer, urban planner, engineer, ecologist, activist, politician, public administrator and more. Our educational vision is to build responsible and creative citizens that will contribute positively to communities worldwide.
SCHEDULE A SCHOOL VISIT
School visits to the Coral Gables Museum are engaging and meet Florida State Standards! The Coral Gables Museum participates in a variety of existing programs for K-12 audiences, and teacher-learning resources are available when you schedule a school tour.
All tours shave a fee of $5 per student and $8 per chaperone. 1 chaperone for every 10 students is required. All tours accept a maximum of 35-40 students unless otherwise stated. All tours take place at the Coral Gables Museum unless otherwise stated.

Available Tour Programs
Green Generation: Superselves
(Offered during School Year Only)
Grades: K-2
Students will be introduced to some of the climate superheroes of South Florida, while also learning to become their most super self. Students will explore personal well being and environmental knowledge to design their own earth superhero.
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
Green Generation: Elemental Engineering
(Offered during School Year Only)
Grades: 3-6
Students will learn about different ways cities and people are changing to become more resilient to the effects of climate change. They will explore how Miami-Dade is tackling these challenges, the history of the building of the Coral Gables Museum and suggest creative climate modifications to the space for the future.

Green Generation: Community Constructing
(Offered during School Year Only)
Grades: 7-12
Students will delve into the complex world of land usage in Miami. This unique tour invites students to step into the shoes of different stakeholders, fostering negotiation, critical thinking, and collaboration skills. Along the way, they’ll learn about local changemkers who have made a positive impact on the city’s environmental landscape. Get ready to explore diverse perspectives on city development while actively engaging in a dynamic and thought-provoking activity.

Discovering Design: History & Architecture
(Offered during School Year Only)
Grades: K-12
Students will be given a tour of our “Creating The Dream” exhibition focusing on the inception and construction of Coral Gables. Other exhibitions relating to the architecture and history within Coral Gables will also be shown (check website). If there are no other related history or architecture exhibits currently showing, students will receive a related presentation based on our previous shows. Students will be able to see photographs, drawings, and paintings of early Coral Gables architecture, learn what kinds of architectural styles were used, about the City Beautiful Movement, and about its founder, George Merrick. Urban planning would be the focus of our activity after our tour and students will work in groups to collectively build a city using paper cutouts or Lego sets.

Beyond the Frame: Visual Arts

Grades: K-12
Discover the wonders of art, history, and architecture with our immersive school tour program at the Coral Gables Museum. Delve into the visual arts exhibitions of “Jorge Tacla: A Memoir of Ruins” and “Ria: Everything Remembered is Dear,” and the rich history showcased in “Celebrating a Century: Coral Gables First Church and Civic Heart.”
Our guides will lead students through these exhibitions, sparking discussions on the purpose of our museum, our unique goals, and the significance of the artwork we showcase. Gain insights into the interpretation of select works, fostering critical thinking and artistic appreciation. Following the tour, students will engage in a hands-on art lesson where they will unleash their creativity using photographs, transfer paper, and oil pastels. This interactive experience combines elements from all the exhibitions, allowing students to express themselves artistically while deepening their understanding of the aesthetic and conceptual themes presented.
