Artisans of Venice: An Endangered Species or the Promise of the Future?

March 29, 2018 | 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Giulia lecture

This free lecture is inspired by the latest exhibition featuring the work of Judi Harvest, Cross-Pollination: Honeybees and Murano Glass. The Coral Gables Museum has invited Giulia Bernardini, art historian and founder of art travel company Wonderfeast, to explore the role of the Venetian artisan in a modern world.

Artisans of Venice: An Endangered Species or the Promise of the Future?

Venice has long been known for its exceptional artisans: from the glass-blowers of Murano to the lace-makers of Burano to the silk weavers of the city proper. But what does the future hold for them? What place is there for skills passed down through generations of craftspeople in a world of mechanization and mass-made commodities? Join us as we investigate the origins of these professions and how the residents of this most unique city in the world – including its artisans – are fighting to keep from becoming a quaint thing of the past.

This FREE lecture will be held on Thursday, March 29 from 6:30-8pm and is open to the general public.
