⠀
“The only possible revenge against the pandemic is in the hands of science, in the form of a vaccine, and in art, in the form of catharsis. The need from which I started this series is common to every artist, that vital impulse that leads us to further complicate reality, because art does not explain, but rather complicates reality even more. Making art in seclusion is a challenge: on the one hand, you have all the time to perfect an idea, and on the other hand, all the material limitations to execute it. I have tried to do my best with that ingredient which is time to think, and the few things within my reach to create these images. The great explosion of the pandemic seized me in the city of Buffalo, in the state of NY, about 6 hours from my neighborhood in northern NJ, on the banks of the Hudson River off the island of Manhattan. Being the area where I live the epicenter of the pandemic in the USA, I decided to stay with my partner Imara López at her residence on Fargo Street in Buffalo. I just brought a camera and an off-camera flash with me. Seeking to take advantage of our time in seclusion, we began working on a series of daily photographs. The Ideas began to flow and in proportion the problems, obstacles, and lack of the right equipment to make them come true. 398 miles away from my studio in NJ and with only two stores open: Dollar Tree and Target, the only solution was to create the instruments to be able to work.” ¬– Geandy Pavón ⠀

Initially published in 2018, this new, updated, and expanded edition of "Sculptress Forgotten" includes many pieces of the enigma that was Joan Keller.
"Sculptress Forgotten: Art, The Great Depression, and the Tumultuous Life of Joan Keller"
One of many iconic images of Coral Gables, America's 'City Beautiful', are the oversized heads of the two firefighters sculpted in keystone above the former city police and fire station. It was known that the busts were carved by a young sculptress named Joan Keller, but who she was and what happened to her had always remained a mystery. When the old fire-station was eventually converted into the Coral Gables Museum, the Museum Director, John Allen and Orestes Gonzalez became determined to solve the mystery of this elusive young artist. This book chronicles their discovery of the sad but fascinating life of this beautiful, forgotten sculptress – who was briefly “The Cinderella Girl of the Florida Art World,” while putting into context the compelling story of America's progress through the mid-twentieth century.
Available January 2021 on Amazon and at the Coral Gables Museum!

Telfar Clemens. “Large Orange Shopping Bag”, 2014.⠀
⠀
Telfar Clemens is a fashion designer and founder of the brand TELFAR. He was born in Queens, New York, to Liberian parents. At the age of five, he went to live in Liberia with his mother and four siblings and came back to the US after the outbreak of the second Liberian civil war (1999-2003). In 2002, he moved to New York to pursue a career in modeling, and the following year he started a collection of deconstructed and reconstructed vintage clothes which he sold in boutiques on the Lower East Side and in Soho. ⠀
His Shopping Bag, that comes in three sizes, became the label’s best-selling item and has humorously been referred to as “the Bushwick Birkin”, except it is much more affordable. “The Telfar brand is built on Clemens’ consistency in honoring the concept of community with a democratic approach to clothing. Telfar provides for the truly fashionable post-identity generation of the moment, rallying the label’s fanbase with a bold collectivist maxim: ‘It’s not for you—it’s for everyone.’ ” ¬says Office Magazine.⠀

Status is culturally communicated in many forms, from the architecture of buildings to the fashion choices people make. Jaime Ávila (Boyacá, Colombia, 1968 - 2020) merged these two seemingly disparate languages to create a vocabulary that allowed him to comment on the power dynamics between the State and the individual. White shirt fabric with fine stripes, or what he would call “fabric from the suit of a young lawyer”, are among the materials he employed in his textile collages. ⠀
In American Tailoring, the U.S. Capitol building is represented under daylight and nightlight. The carefully-matched stripes of the fabric remind us of the lined paper of legal pads and establish a relationship between the elite running these government institutions and the institutions themselves. The predellas of faceless “men in the grey flannel suits” could be taken as a proposed typology of materials and their meaning for Ávila. In his pencil annotations, the different patterns and makes are matched with occupations and rooms inside this symbolic building.⠀

Join artists Eddie Arroyo, Camille Eskell, Kandy López, and Thomas Bils, and the curators from the exhibition Alien Nations 2020 for a lively 90-minute discussion of how Artistry intersects with Alienation to spark the creative impulse.
Among the timely questions that will be explored in the session are how does the enforced isolation of a pandemic shape an artist’s practice? How does the embrace of heated social justice issues spur artistic engagement? How have the chaotic events of the past year shifted the discussion of artists engaging with arts institutions? How can alienation lead to depression and a loss of creativity? How can we employ the visual arts as solace that can help heal societal alienation?
