Arva Moore Park's legacy lives on in the Coral Gables Museum, as the permanent curator of "Creating the Dream", in which her name will forever be stamped.

Telfar Clemens. “Large Orange Shopping Bag”, 2014.⠀

Telfar Clemens is a fashion designer and founder of the brand TELFAR. He was born in Queens, New York, to Liberian parents. At the age of five, he went to live in Liberia with his mother and four siblings and came back to the US after the outbreak of the second Liberian civil war (1999-2003). In 2002, he moved to New York to pursue a career in modeling, and the following year he started a collection of deconstructed and reconstructed vintage clothes which he sold in boutiques on the Lower East Side and in Soho. ⠀
His Shopping Bag, that comes in three sizes, became the label’s best-selling item and has humorously been referred to as “the Bushwick Birkin”, except it is much more affordable. “The Telfar brand is built on Clemens’ consistency in honoring the concept of community with a democratic approach to clothing. Telfar provides for the truly fashionable post-identity generation of the moment, rallying the label’s fanbase with a bold collectivist maxim: ‘It’s not for you—it’s for everyone.’ ” ¬says Office Magazine.⠀

Status is culturally communicated in many forms, from the architecture of buildings to the fashion choices people make. Jaime Ávila (Boyacá, Colombia, 1968 - 2020) merged these two seemingly disparate languages to create a vocabulary that allowed him to comment on the power dynamics between the State and the individual. White shirt fabric with fine stripes, or what he would call “fabric from the suit of a young lawyer”, are among the materials he employed in his textile collages. ⠀
In American Tailoring, the U.S. Capitol building is represented under daylight and nightlight. The carefully-matched stripes of the fabric remind us of the lined paper of legal pads and establish a relationship between the elite running these government institutions and the institutions themselves. The predellas of faceless “men in the grey flannel suits” could be taken as a proposed typology of materials and their meaning for Ávila. In his pencil annotations, the different patterns and makes are matched with occupations and rooms inside this symbolic building.⠀

Due to the wonderful response to "Quarantine: 40 Days and 40 Nights", both from the public and the press, we are pleased to announce that the exhibition will be extended until February 4th, 2021. You can still visit the Museum to enjoy this insightful photographic essay on life during a pandemic, by artist Geandy Pavón. The works are accompanied by a master interpretation of Cuban musician Jose White’s song La Bella Cubana, by Paquito D’Rivera.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Museum is offering a one-hour Valentine’s Day Special on Friday evening, February 12 at 6:30 PM.
The presentation, ‘Love and Wine in a Time of Cholera’ will be accompanied by two wines while Patrick Alexander, the Museum’s resident oenophile, examines, some of the greatest and most passionate Love Pairings in history, from Anthony & Cleopatra, and Pyramus & Thisbe, to Tristan & Isolde and Heloise & Abelard.

In Raked Leaves (Apparition), Patrick Jacobs (California, US, 1971) presents a miniature scene viewed through a circular window of glass lenses. The distorting optical interface bends light to make objects appear further away than they are. The illusion allows us to perceive a vibrant world that is captivating in its clarity. Yet, it provides no point of reference as to the exact dimensions of the scene we are viewing, creating a subtle tension and sense of unreality - it rather instills a longing for a real Arcadian place. In this scene, a figure rises out of the dead leaves and branches encircled by a bower of delicate rose flowers and foliage. Amidst the exquisite beauty, this eerie being disturbs. Whether created by an unseen protagonist, or a spectral manifestation of the landscape itself is uncertain. But it smiles at us knowingly, its mouth and eye-sockets illuminated by the moonlit sky, fully aware of our unobtainable desires.
