Scavenger Hunt: “Exploring the World of A.E. ‘Beanie’ Backus”
Welcome, young explorers!
As you journey through this beautiful exhibition celebrating Florida artist Albert Ernest “Beanie” Backus, get ready to become art detectives!
This special scavenger hunt invites children and families to look closely, imagine boldly, and discover how one artist helped shape the way we see Florida’s natural beauty.
As you explore the galleries, you’ll search for glowing sunsets, winding waterways, and wide-open skies. Can you find a painting filled with rich greens and blues that captures the mystery of the Everglades? Look carefully — where is the light coming from? How does it make you feel?
Keep an eye out for paintings inspired by places beyond Florida, too! Backus spent time in Oracabessa, Jamaica, painting vibrant island scenes. Can you spot the differences between Florida’s landscapes and Jamaica’s?
You’ll also discover a truly unusual artwork — a body cast painted and signed by Backus after his friend recovered from a plane accident. Why do you think the artist chose to transform something medical into a work of art?
This scavenger hunt is more than a search — it’s an adventure through nature, friendship, and creativity. As you explore, you’ll learn how Backus inspired a new generation of artists and helped define Florida’s artistic identity.
