Thomas Bils’ work often departs from personal documents of the past that relate specific memories and experiences – from photographic snapshots of his adolescence in central Florida to recent parking tickets. In the paintings, the original references are distorted by embellishing details and events. Bils succeeds in creating a tension between truth and fiction in images that portray the aesthetics of his geography and his generation, and yet have been turned into unreliable memories. 

Bils has a BFA in Painting from New World School of the Arts. Originally from Melbourne, Florida, he is currently based in Miami, where he is an artist in residence at the Bakehouse Art Complex.
