The tradition of the carpets of La Antigua Guatemala is one of the most emblematic cultural treasures of that country—an artistic expression that unites faith, community, and creativity in a single act. Recognized as part of Guatemala’s Holy Week celebrations, inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, these carpets embody a living heritage that continues to inspire and connect generations.
Each carpet—crafted with dyed sawdust, flowers, fruits, seeds, and natural elements—is a true masterpiece of ephemeral art. Their beauty lies not only in the meticulous designs representing religious, natural, and cultural symbols, but also in the profound sense of community with which they are created: families, artists, and neighbors working together for hours—sometimes days—to bring to life something that will exist only for a brief moment.
Showcasing this tradition at the Coral Gables Museum is both an honor and testament of the sisterhood between La Antigua Guatemala and the City of Coral Gables.
These carpets do more than beautify the space; they tell stories, celebrate identity, and keep the roots of generations alive. They remind us that art can also be an act of unity and spirituality. This exhibition invites the community to celebrate Guatemalan talent, appreciate handcrafted art, and experience one of the most admired cultural expressions in Latin America.
This project has been organized by the City of Coral Gables, the Municipalidad de Antigua Guatemala, and the Consulado General de Guatemala in Miami, with the support of the Coral Gables Museum.
La tradición de las alfombras de La Antigua Guatemala es uno de los tesoros culturales más emblemáticos de ese país: una expresión artística que une fe, comunidad y creatividad en un mismo acto. Reconocidas como parte de las celebraciones de Semana Santa de Guatemala, inscritas por UNESCO en la Lista Representativa del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad, estas alfombras encarnan un patrimonio vivo que continúa inspirando y conectando generaciones.
Cada alfombra —elaborada con aserrín teñido, flores, frutas, semillas y elementos naturales— es una verdadera obra maestra de arte efímero. Su belleza no reside solo en los minuciosos diseños que representan símbolos religiosos, naturales y culturales, sino también en el profundo sentido de comunidad con el que se crean: familias, artistas y vecinos trabajando juntos durante horas —a veces días— para dar vida a algo que existirá solo por un breve momento.
Presentar esta tradición en el Coral Gables Museum es tanto un honor como un testimonio de la hermandad entre La Antigua Guatemala y la Ciudad de Coral Gables.
Estas alfombras hacen más que embellecer el espacio; cuentan historias, celebran la identidad y mantienen vivas las raíces de generaciones. Nos recuerdan que el arte también puede ser un acto de unidad y espiritualidad.
Esta exhibición invita a la comunidad a celebrar el talento guatemalteco, apreciar el arte hecho a mano y experimentar una de las expresiones culturales más admiradas de América Latina.
