Deborah Willis. “Meditation on Joan Baez’s Civil War”, 2019
2-Channel Video, MP4, 00:04’:23”. Dancers: Kevin Boseman and Djassi Johnson
Courtesy of Deborah Willis and Bernice Steinbaum

Released in 2018, Whistle Down the Wind was the final album of folk singer and activist Joan Baez, on which she covered nine different contemporary songwriters, to present her take on our contemporary cultural turmoil. As a collaborative project, each song on the album was interpreted by a visual artist, and Deborah Willis (Pennsylvania, USA, 1948), chose the song “Civil War” as inspiration for her video. Here, a young couple performs a waltz while historical and contemporary photographs are projected onto their bodies. Willis says, by “using my own photographs and projected images from the archive of the 19th century and the work of [her son] Hank Willis Thomas, I wanted to foreground memory, clothing, objects through the pace of a waltz.” The work features the choreographer and dancers Djassi Johnson and Kevin Boseman, weaving together the past and present, man and woman, the personal and the political, to spellbinding effect.

INSIDE THE CORAL GABLES MUSEUM:

From the exhibition “The Caribbee Club:
LISU VEGA; CAPTIVE BODY / LISU VEGA; CUERPO CAUTIVO”
February 19th, 2021 – May 19th, 2021 | Frank Lynn Gallery

Lisu Vega’s early education on experimental engraving led her to explore multiple materials, such as paper, fabric, and metal and became an incentive to move out of the canvas into the tri-dimensional work. Her constant search for her Wayuu heritage has driven her to explore the relationship between fiber, the human body, and the space that surrounds it. In Captive Body, a series that is at the intersection of fashion and art, the act of weaving is both, literal and metaphoric as it alludes to the process of piecing memories together.

Vega’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Recent exhibition highlights include “Innovative Costume of the 21 century: The Next Generation” (Bakhrushin Museum, Moscow;) and “For Now; Contemporary Venezuelan Art of the Miami Diaspora” (Coral Gables Museum, Florida) in 2019.

Brand new copies of "Sculptress Forgotten" have arrived at the Museum!

Initially published in 2018, this new, updated, and expanded edition of "Sculptress Forgotten" includes many pieces of the enigma that was Joan Keller.

"Sculptress Forgotten: Art, The Great Depression, and the Tumultuous Life of Joan Keller"

One of many iconic images of Coral Gables, America's 'City Beautiful', are the oversized heads of the two firefighters sculpted in keystone above the former city police and fire station. It was known that the busts were carved by a young sculptress named Joan Keller, but who she was and what happened to her had always remained a mystery. When the old fire-station was eventually converted into the Coral Gables Museum, the Museum Director, John Allen and Orestes Gonzalez became determined to solve the mystery of this elusive young artist. This book chronicles their discovery of the sad but fascinating life of this beautiful, forgotten sculptress – who was briefly “The Cinderella Girl of the Florida Art World,” while putting into context the compelling story of America's progress through the mid-twentieth century.
