Catalog Launch for “The Vote that Saved the Biltmore…”

August 2, 2023 | 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Dorothy Thomson on Wednesday, August 2nd, for the exclusive launch of her exhibition catalog: “The Vote that Saved the Biltmore…”

Dive deeper into the captivating story of the public servant that fought to preserve one of our city’s most iconic landmarks. Whether you’ve visited the exhibit since its opening last August or not, this event is a celebration of our community’s rich history and commitment to preservation. This exhibition will be on view until Sunday, August 13th, so don’t miss your chance to take home this civic journey through this beautifully curated catalog.

This exhibition explores a turning point in the City of Coral Gables when Dorothy Thomson and Arva Moore Parks joined forces to change the course of history for the Biltmore Hotel. In 1980, the icon was vacant and vandalized. After her interaction with local historian Arva Moore Parks, Commissioner Thomson changed her vote at the City Commission Meeting and paved the way for the Biltmore to be restored as the hotel landmark it is today. Along with the work of other city commissioners then, the alliance between these two women, pillars of the community, was decisive in upholding the architectural legacy of city founder George E. Merrick. The exhibition also covers Thomson’s remarkable political career and her many contributions to community life and the historic preservation of The City Beautiful.

Pre-purchase your catalog for $5 off and pick it up at the event!
